Introduction to Patent Law

Introduction to Patent Law

The goal of a successful invention or idea is usually to make sure you can make money off of it. But the only way to do that is to protect your idea and invention. That's where patents come in handy. Essentially, when the Government grants you a patent, it is saying that you have a monopoly on that invention for the next 20 years! During those 20 years you have the right to prevent others from making, using, manufacturing or selling your patented idea/invention.

This section explains the different types of patents and what is special about each. It also explains the process of registering your patent with the United States Patent Office and gives you some idea as to what foreign rights you need to be aware of, so someone cannot take your US patent, run to Mexico and start making your invention there and importing it back here.

You can also find out what rights you have and what you can do if someone tries to copy or use your patent without your permission, as well as who owns the patent to an invention created at work.

Finally, you will also find some ideas on what to consider if you want to license your idea to someone else. Also be sure to look at our Patent Application Checklist, so you can ensure you have everything you need if you want to get a patent.
